What can you do when someone tailgates you?

On Behalf of | Oct 2, 2024 | Personal Injury

Tailgating is a risky behavior that contributes to a significant percentage of accidents yearly. Thus, it’s understandable to be frustrated when a driver follows you too closely. However, your response to the other driver may also endanger you,

You should know how to deal with tailgaters without creating a risk for yourself. Here is what to consider doing if you find yourself in such a situation:

Stay calm

Tailgating can encourage you to engage in actions that may be dangerous. For instance, you may feel pressured to speed up to increase the following distance or slam your brakes to send the other driver a message to stop tailgating you. But these options are unwise.

For starters, speeding is unlawful, and it can cause an accident. Additionally, the other driver may increase their speed as well.

Further, slamming your brakes can lead to a collision because the other driver may not have enough space and time to stop, hitting your rear. Besides, since slamming on your brakes without warning can be considered a reckless driving offense, you may be in legal trouble for doing so.

Thus, the best way to deal with a tailgater is to stay calm. Maintain your speed and do not provoke them by sending messages/using gestures.

Let them pass

While maintaining calm, look for a safe way to let the tailgater pass. When on a multi-lane road, safely move to the right lane to let the other driver pass on the left. When on a single-lane road, pull over at an open and well-lit parking lot or gas station.

Unfortunately, you can’t control other people’s actions on the road. If you come across a tailgater, the above-discussed tips can keep you safe. If they hit you, obtain as much information as possible to fight for your rights.
